Abstract

The article investigates the concept of «world» in the earliest publications of Norwegian lay evangelist Hans Nielsen Hauge. By using Reinhart Koselleck’s qualification of Begriffsgeschichte as having elements from the History of Ideas as of Social History, Hauge’s understanding of «world» is seen in light of deep trends within Lutheranism in the new piety stemming from Johann Arndt, Philipp J. Spener and Erik Pontoppidan. Hauge appears as having a radical interpretation of how sinful the world is due to his sharp distinction between spirit and flesh.
