Writing new, spiritual lyrics to well-known hymn melodies was commonplace in the eighteenth century. This was also common among Haugeans. This article analyzes 23 songs written by women who subscribed to the teaching of Hans Nielsen Hauge, which were published by Hans Nielsen Hauge between 1796–1804, during the first phase of the Haugean movement. The lyrics express the inner spiritual life of the individual writers and the movement as a whole. They are influenced by Christian mysticism, and the ordo salutis of Pietism emphasizing rebirth and a new holy life. The texts also shed light on what the movement’s female preachers communicated to others within and outside of the conventicle.
