Author Guidelines
Thank you for sending in an article for publication in Nordic Journal of Practical Theology! We ask you to read the author guidelines carefully. For the journal's purpose and profile, see: https://journals.mf.no/NJPT/about.
NJPT publishes the following types of articles: Peer-reviewed, scientific articles. Other articles such as essays and shorter texts. Book reviews.
This guideline applies primarily to peer-reviewed articles but is applied to other texts as far as it is relevant. Specific guidelines for other articles, see below.
NJPT prioritizes academic texts in Norwegian or other Scandinavian languages, but we accept English manuscripts as well.
Articles can be uploaded to journals.mf.no/NJPT or sent as an attachment to NJPT@mf.no.
Scientific articles
What is a scientific article in NJPT?
A scientific article should provide a precise and well-argued contribution to new knowledge within the journal's field of study. NJPT wishes to include a diversity of practical-theological research traditions and article genres. Examples of articles we consider:
- Empirical articles (based on a current empirical research project)
- Review articles (contain a discussion of other, previously published research with the aim of highlighting the research frontier within the relevant field of study)
- Historical articles with practical-theological themes.
- Theoretical and/or literature-based articles (discuss theoretical issues with reference to subject, research and practice).
Requirements for the article
In line with the desire for diversity above, the editorial team does not require that all articles be structured using the same template. If the article clearly deviates from traditional outlines, we recommend that the author justify this well in the article and/or in a cover letter to the editor.
However, it is a requirement that the article:
- Positions itself in a current research discussion/clearly explains what constitutes the academic contribution.
- Is transparent in its argumentation, explains arguments that go both ways, and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the study.
- Has a design that shows that there is coherence between the problem, material selection, theoretical perspectives, method, etc.
- As far as relevant, presents and discusses theoretical perspectives in use.
- Explains the methodological process.
- Writes up and discusses the findings/analysis in such a way that the problem is answered and the implications are clear.
- In conclusion:
o Explains whether the article is funded by external funds at the bottom of the text.
o If multiple authors, indicate the contributions of the different authors.
Technichalities and style
- Article word count:
o When the article is uploaded to journals.mf.no: The article should not exceed 50,000 characters including spaces. This includes all references and any tables/figures.
o When the article is sent as an attachment to an e-mail: The article should not exceed 52,000 characters including spaces. This includes all references, any tables/figures, as well as summaries and keywords.
- The article should contain one abstract in English and one in a Scandinavian language, both of a maximum of 1,000 characters including spaces.
- The article should have up to 8 keywords in English and a Scandinavian language respectively.
- References: NJPT wants to have precise references with page numbers as far as is natural. Articles should use APA 7th as a reference style, including DOI for all references where applicable.
- Footnotes: Can be used to elaborate or provide additional information, but we prefer that the use of footnotes is limited and that as much as possible is placed in the running text. Literature references should be in the body of the text.
- Tables, figures, images, etc. should be numbered, and can be inserted in the correct place in the running text when the manuscript is submitted. The author must enter alternative text for all of them (in the final version).
- The authors are listed in the correct order in journals.mf.no/NJPT or your own template, with full name, position and institution. ORCID can be included. The first author's email address must be entered.
Article review process
NJPT strives to process manuscripts efficiently.
The editor’s assessment may be that the article is rejected, that we request some revisions, or that it goes straight to a peer.
NJPT always uses two peers for each article, with mutual anonymity (blind/blind). The peers assess whether the article should be rejected, accepted with major changes, accepted with minor changes, or published as is. The authors receive the peer reviews together, with the editor's comments.
As far as possible, the peers receive the revised article back for a new assessment.
The editorial team proofreads Norwegian articles. Authors who submit articles in other languages must pay for the language cleaning/proofreading themselves.
The published article
NJPT does its best to inform the public about a new edition. We are also happy if the authors contribute to marketing both the whole edition and their own article in channels available to them.
NJPT's articles are open access diamond, licensed with CC BY 4.0. If authors are employed at a university institution with a knowledge archive, we recommend sharing the published version in the knowledge archive with reference to NJPT via the DOI link. We ask that the author direct interested readers to read/download the article at journals.mf.no/NJPT.
Other articles, not peer-reviewed
"Other articles" provide room for a freer or more essayistic form where you can provide pointed contributions with relevance to NJPT's readers. Such articles are suitable for sharing academic topics that you have delved into or for reflecting academically on experiences from church practice.
The author is free to design the article at his or her own discretion, but there are usual requirements for precision and use of sources.
Scope: Normally up to 25,000 characters including spaces. This includes references and any tables. Up to 5 keywords. The article does not have an abstract in the PDF version, but may have one in the web version.
Reference style: APA 7th.
Book reviews and short book reports
NJPT is happy to publish reviews of current academic publications, including other types of publications relevant to the journal.
A book report should be short, approximately 250 words, and primarily make readers aware of a new publication.
A book review presents the publication in more detail and also provides an assessment. Here we are flexible in terms of scope, but 1500 words will usually be the maximum.
The text must state the author of the book, title, edition/year, publisher and who the reviewer is. References are limited to a minimum.
If you would like to review or comment on a book for NJPT: You are welcome to contact the editorial team, and we will try to obtain a review copy.
